Cannabis dispensary search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of developing your dispensary’s online presence such that you rank highly in Google’s search results for keywords like “dispensary near me.”
The benefit is obvious: people want to buy, they go to Google, you show up, they buy from you.
What some dispensaries don’t understand, though, is that ranking in Google’s Local Pack feature is far more valuable than ranking in the regular search results.
This is because the Local Pack – which contains Google Business Profiles – typically shows up at the top of the page for “dispensary near me” and other local searches.
Even fewer dispensaries have the playbook for getting into the Local Pack and opening the floodgate of new foot traffic that SEO can bring.
So in this cannabis dispensary SEO guide, we’re giving you the blueprint. We’ll show you how to rank your dispensary in the Local Pack, take advantage of secondary ranking opportunities, and show you how to turn Google and AI search into a customer acquisition engine for your business.
Why Is SEO So Important for Cannabis Dispensaries?
Dispensaries are dumping their marketing dollars into SEO like never before. Here’s why:
Google Is Where People Go to Discover Dispensaries
When someone’s looking for a dispensary they’re going to search “dispensary near me” on Google first (the same applies to most local businesses – how do you find a coffee shop or hire a tow truck?).
That means ranking in the Google Local Pack, and in Google’s organic results more broadly, puts you right where your customers already are during the discovery phase. If you’re not showing up there, you’re invisible to the exact moment of intent that turns into a store visit.
Paid Ads Are Hard to Run in Cannabis
Paid ads can be run in cannabis, but shutdowns are extremely common, restrictions are heavy, and it takes a significant budget just to get started. Without a track record of traffic for platforms to build a look-alike audience from, cannabis brands don’t get the same targeting efficiency other industries do. This is especially frustrating if you’re just getting started and don’t have the reference data these platforms need to perform well.
Paid ads still have their place, but they’re not the primary channel most dispensaries rely upon when they can instead do SEO.
Third-Party Platforms Are Charging More and Delivering Less
As competition in every dispensary market has intensified, platforms like Weedmaps and Leafly keep hiking their rates, while average customer lifetime value in maturing markets keeps going down. This means that, over time, you continue to pay more to acquire a customer who’s worth less.
On top of that, Google’s algorithm increasingly favors local businesses over national platforms in local search results, which means that these platforms are less influential (and thus less impactful for your business) than they used to be.
It’s worth noting that these platforms’ own growth metrics haven’t always held up to scrutiny – WM Technology, Weedmaps’ parent company, was fined $1.5 million by the SEC in 2024 over allegations that it misstated its “monthly active user” figures for more than a year [1], a reminder that the traffic numbers third-party platforms report aren’t always what they seem.
If you’re a dispensary owner weighing where to put your marketing dollars, this is big: local SEO is probably the single best channel available to you, precisely because it doesn’t depend on ad platforms that restrict you or third-party sites that are getting more expensive and less reliable [2].
Instead of renting your traffic through a 3rd-party platform, you can build a channel you own by doing local SEO.
Cannabis Dispensary SEO Strategy: The High-Level Framework
Before you write a single page or build a single link, you need to have an SEO strategy.
To build a good one for your dispensary, we need to understand (1) the goal of SEO (2) how SEO works, or how we can achieve that goal, and (3) a practical framework for putting it into practice and systems we can use to execute it.
If you just want to know which pages to build, feel free to skip this section. We’re including it, though, because it’s the insight behind why various dispensary SEO tactics actually work.
Goals of Dispensary SEO
Before prescribing a strategy, it’s important that we get clear on the goals of dispensary SEO. There are three big ones:
- Rank your Google Business Profile higher in the Local Pack for local transactional keywords
- Rank your website in the regular search results for local transactional keywords and informational keywords
- Get your brand mentioned, cited, and linked to in AI search (Google AI overviews, Google AI mode, and ChatGPT are your big three)
How SEO Works
With the goals in mind, we now need to understand what factors determine which brands rank. This will then allow us to build an SEO strategy
The Local Pack
Local Pack rankings are determined by three things:
- Proximity: The physical proximity of your dispensary’s address to the person searching. You can’t change your address (easily), but you should account for it when deciding which local content to build.
- Relevance: How well your business matches the business type and/or products people are searching for. The best way to improve relevance is to create pages talking about your business and the things you sell.
- Prominence: How prominent or well-known your business is in the area. The best ways to improve prominence are getting Google reviews, getting backlinks, and landing brand mentions on 3rd-party websites.
The more proximity, relevance, and prominence you have, the better you’ll rank in the Local Pack when someone searches “dispensary near me.”
Regular Search Results
Rankings in the standard blue-link search results on Google are determined by two main things:
- Search Intent: This refers to the degree to which the pages you create fulfill the goals of the searcher. Google determines the quality of your content primarily based on how people interact with it (longer visit durations and less clicking back into the results page = better), so the more helpful your pages are to achieving the searcher’s goal(s), the higher you’ll rank.
- Website Authority: Brands with higher-authority websites tend to rank higher and more quickly for the keywords they target. There is no specific metric to measure your site’s authority (although metrics like “DA” and “DR” are some rough approximations), but generally, the more backlinks, mentions, and relevant content you have, the stronger your site will be. The most important thing is that you have more authority than your competitors, which is often easier than you think.
The better your pages meet search intent and the more authority your website has, the higher you’ll rank for your target keywords (of course, your ICP determines which keywords you’re trying to rank and meet search intent for).
AI Search Results
The formula for being mentioned and cited in AI search results is a bit hazy – not least because each AI surface has its own algorithms and retrieval method.
That being said, a few reliable visibility methods are as follows:
- Land Mentions on Retrieval Sources: Input a bottom of funnel prompt that your customers might input, like “what’s the best dispensary in [your city]?” Take note of the pages the AI platform is citing. Then, do the work required to get your brand listed on these sources. If it’s an editorial article, outreach and ask to be included. If it’s a directory, create a profile for your dispensary on it.
- Create “Lookalike” Retrieval Sources: Once you try to get your brand mentioned on the currently-cited sources, create more sources similar to the existing ones. This way, AI might choose to begin citing a source you create. Using the previous examples, if you see a lot of editorial articles being cited, write your own editorial pieces and pay to have them placed on 3rd-party websites. In other words, figure out what AI platforms currently like, then feed them more of it.
These two methods can help your dispensary be mentioned more frequently in response to the prompts that matter most – “dispensary near me” and things of that sort.
However, the other SEO efforts you undertake to rank on other platforms, which include content development and authority building, will also help you show up more often across AI surfaces.
The Dispensary SEO System
So you understand how cannabis SEO works now. But what are you going to do about it?
Here’s the practical two-part SEO system we run for every cannabis dispensary we work with:
- ICP SEO: Our content strategy. We identify your ideal customer profile, map every part of their buyer journey from initial discovery to final purchase, and figure out what they’re searching for at each stage – so your brand shows up whenever it actually matters for conversions.
- Aperture Authority Stack: Our link building and off-site strategy. Built on the idea that off-site signals often matter more than on-site ones, since Google and people alike judge legitimacy based on third-party mentions and links. We build links, parasite SEO placements, press releases, and more to help your dispensary rank higher in the search results and be mentioned more often on AI surfaces.
It’s a system designed to put your dispensary in front of customers across all of the relevant platforms, at all of the relevant moments in their buying journey.
With these systems as our guide, our dispensary SEO strategies call for execution across five areas: keyword research, Google Business Profile, on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical SEO. Below, we’ll break down the tactical steps we recommend taking in each area.
Keyword Research for Cannabis Dispensaries
The first part of cannabis SEO is keyword research. With your ICP in mind, you need to find the keywords these potential customers are searching for at every stage of their buyer’s journey. Based on that, you’ll know which pages to build.
We could spend multiple articles talking about how to find keywords – there’s simply too much to cover for this piece. Instead, here are the main types of keywords you need to be considering and building for on your dispensary’s website.
Category Keywords
This is your business category plus your location – “dispensary Boston,” for example, or the more general version “dispensary near me.”
It’s your single most important keyword type because it captures the customer you most want: someone actively looking for a dispensary in your location. If you’re not ranking for your own category in your own city, nothing else in this list matters yet.
Best Category Keywords
These are searches like “best dispensaries in Boston” – someone comparing options within your category rather than searching for a single business.
This is bottom-of-funnel, high-intent traffic: if you’re in front of these searchers, you’re in the consideration set for people actively deciding where to shop.
Product Category Keywords
These searches target the products you carry – “cannabis flower,” “vapes,” “pre-rolls.” If you’re a dispensary that carries a specific product line, building pages for these keywords tells Google exactly what you sell and where, which matters for both regular rankings and AI search.
Often, even if someone doesn’t include the city name in the keyword (e.g. “cannabis flower Boston”), Google will trigger the Local Pack and local pages because it can be assumed that the searcher is looking for these products nearby.
Strain Keywords
People search for specific strains, often with “near me” attached, because they want to know where they can buy that strain locally.
If you carry a strain that’s popular enough to have its own search volume, a dedicated page means the next person searching “Blue Dream strain near me” in your area lands directly on your site.
Brand Keywords
Cannabis brands often have a favorite brand of edibles, pre-rolls, or concentrates, and search for it directly. If you carry that brand, a page for it means you show up when someone’s looking for where to buy it near them: a straightforward way to capture demand you’re already meeting in-store.
Informational Keywords
These are the questions your customers ask your budtenders in person: “can you bring a vape on a plane,” “live resin versus distillate,” and similar.
Blog content answering these questions puts you in front of people earlier in their research, before they’ve decided where to shop.
Creating this content also builds your brand up as a topical authority, which means your website’s domain is stronger. This then results in you being able to rank for more competitive, more valuable keywords.
Competitor Keywords
This is an undertargeted keyword type: people searching your competitors’ names. Writing a comparison article – your dispensary versus your top two competitors – lets you catch people mid-comparison while also occasionally ranking for your competitors’ brand names, effectively inserting yourself into their branded search funnel.
Google Business Profile SEO for Cannabis Dispensaries
Your Google Business Profile is the engine behind your Local Pack rankings, and there’s more to it than most dispensaries realize.
We won’t bore you with an A-Z checklist of the best practices, though. Instead, here are the four biggest Google Business Profile Levers that most dispensaries underutilize:
Complete Your Profile
Fill out every available field. Google asks for so much detail because it wants to match your profile to increasingly specific, nuanced searches, especially with AI search now handling more complex queries.
A fully completed profile gives Google more to match you against, so don’t leave any section blank.
Add Images and Videos
Most dispensaries post on Instagram constantly, but then neglect their Google Business Profile. Don’t make that mistake!
Google uses media posting frequency and volume as a signal of how active you are in your area, on top of the obvious benefit that customers get a preview of your store. Aim for five to ten new pieces of media per month at minimum.
Connect Your Social Media Profiles
Linking your social accounts to your Google Business Profile gives Google an ongoing feed of information about your business. An in-store event that you mention on a connected profile, for instance, could get pulled into an AI Overview and become the detail that convinces someone to visit you instead of a competitor.
It’s a low-effort way to help Google recommend you more intelligently across a wider range of queries – we also find it shocking how many dispensaries don’t do this or have it set up properly.
Implement a Google Review Acquisition System
Reviews are one of the biggest Local Pack ranking factors, and Google specifically favors review velocity and recency. The point on velocity is powerful: if you significantly out-pace a competitor’s review count for even a few months, you can outrank them.
Have your budtenders ask every happy customer in person, make it frictionless with an in-store QR code, and layer in email or SMS automation to catch the customers who say they’ll leave one later and then forget.
On-Page SEO for Cannabis Dispensaries
Now comes on-page SEO, the part of dispensary SEO that involves building and improving your website.
Remember, the goal of content is to improve your relevance (to influence Local Pack rankings) and rank in the regular results.
So, content needs to represent what your business is, where it’s located, and what you sell, and it also needs to cover the entire buyer journey.
With that in mind, here’s what you need to build:
Location Pages
Every physical store needs its own location detail page (LDP). Think of these pages as online store guides.
Each page should include your business name, address, phone number, product categories, what to expect in-store, legality info, and your rewards program.
Service Area Pages
Once you’ve stood up pages for your physical locations, build service area pages for the three to five nearest cities each store serves, targeting “dispensary near [city]” rather than claiming you’re located there.
You should embed your Google Business Profile on your LDPs; service area pages should include Google Map embeds of driving directions from that area to your store.
Product Category Pages
Build a page for every high-level product category you carry (flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles), plus subcategory pages underneath (indica flower, infused pre-rolls, and so on).
This way, Google knows which products you carry so you’ll rank in the Local Pack for “infused pre-rolls near me” – not just “dispensary near me.”
Brand Pages
Many people search for their favorite cannabis brands locally. They’re looking for the nearest dispensary that carries their brand. So, create pages for your top 20-30 brands that include actual product listings. This way, Google knows to recommend you in the Local Pack and rank you in the search results if someone is searching for a brand you have.
Strain Pages
Build pages for your most popular strains. People are constantly looking for specific strains near them – if you have a page for that strain, Google will know you carry it, so they’ll recommend you to these searchers.
Deals Pages
Capture dealhunters in every city where you have a location by building deals pages. Target “weed deals [your city]” with pages that include current live deals and information about where to sign up for future deals.
Side note: these pages are excellent for email capture.
Blog Posts
Write listicle blog posts to capture additional customers and build your brand’s presence in AI. These formats are the highest impact:
- Best [category] in [city] = “Best Dispensaries in Detroit, Michigan”
- Best [product category] in [state] = “Best Pre-rolls in Michigan”
- [Competitor] vs [competitor] vs [your dispensary] = “Eaze vs. STIIZY vs. LA Kush”
Then, with all of the main buying scenarios and keywords covered, cover the middle and top of the funnel with helpful blog content.
We recommend picking your most profitable product categories, then answering every question you can about them with blog posts (e.g. infused pre rolls = what are infused pre-rolls, infused vs. regular pre-rolls, etc). This will build your brand’s website authority for these product categories, which will help your local, transactional content for these categories to rank better.
Off-Page SEO for Cannabis Dispensaries
Off-page SEO is what it sounds like – SEO you do for your dispensary away from your website.
Ultimately, it boils down to building backlinks to your website and getting your dispensary’s name mentioned on 3rd-party websites. This increases your website authority and prominence – both Google ranking factors – and generally increases how visible you are to searchers in your market.
Citations
A citation is a directory listing – Yelp, Weedmaps, and general and cannabis-specific directories – that represents one of your physical locations. Google uses these to confirm the accuracy of your Google Business Profile information, and AI platforms pull from them heavily too, including for reviews. Build out 30-40 citations to start, prioritizing the major platforms plus every cannabis-specific directory you can find.
Link Insertions
A link insertion is when you get a link to one of your pages added to an existing page on another website. Links function as a vote of legitimacy for your brand, and since links are one of the main signals Google uses to judge how prominent a business is, and prominence directly factors into Local Pack rankings, this is worth active investment.
Focus on getting link insertions on pages relevant to cannabis and wellness.
Parasite SEO
Parasite SEO involves placing a page designed to rank for a high-value keyword – like “best dispensaries in [your city]” – on someone else’s high-authority website rather than your own.
Beyond the referral traffic and the ranking speed a high-authority domain provides, these placements function as both a brand mention and a backlink, and backlinks that pass through real traffic confer meaningfully more authority than static links.
Technical SEO for Cannabis Dispensaries
Apart from initial schema markup and internal linking setup, good technical SEO for your cannabis dispensary is more about “website hygiene” than active development.
Here are four key levers to keep your site from breaking as it grows:
Schema Markup
Schema is structured data that tells Google (and AI platforms) exactly what’s on a page. For example, on a product page, some information type that may be present are price, stock quantity, review counts, and more.
Schema markup isn’t a ranking factor in Google, but it does have a strong correlation with ChatGPT visibility and “ranking” in responses for bottom-of-funnel prompts. Given that ChatGPT is the largest non-Google AI search platform, Schema is a lever worth pulling.
Internal Linking
Proper internal linking distributes your website authority to the pages that need it, helping them to rank better.
Link pages within the same level of your site to each other (all your product category pages should interlink), and link up and down the hierarchy (subcategory pages should link to their parent category, and category pages should link up to your shop or homepage).
Indexing & 404s
Keep low-value, auto-generated pages (like WordPress blog category archives) out of Google’s index so they don’t cannibalize your real content’s rankings or waste crawl budget that could go toward pages with an actual shot at ranking.
Fix broken links and redirect 404s promptly – a broken link is one of the fastest ways to make a visitor bounce, and Google’s ranking system leans heavily on user session data like time-on-site.
Site Speed
Slow sites tend to underperform in search, both because Google actively monitors speed through Search Console and because slow pages hurt the same user experience signals that Google uses to determine the rankings.
Run Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool, then act on the recommendations. Typically, compressing large images and moving your website to better hosting are the two keys to faster load time.
Cannabis SEO for Multiple Locations: Key Considerations
The cannabis SEO playbook we’ve laid out in this article applies whether you’re a single-location dispensary or a multi-state operator (MSO).
However, there are a few additional items and nuances you need to account for if you’re running an SEO playbook for multiple locations:
- You’ll need local content for each store: Each store needs its own location detail page plus its own set of service area pages.
- You’ll need separate authority-building work for each store: Citations are tied to each location’s name, address, and phone number, so you need a distinct round of citations per address. Additionally, we strongly recommend building location-specific parasite SEO pages and backlinks to build prominence and AI visibility per-market rather than solely at the brand level.
- Your homepage should not target a single city keyword: If you have stores across multiple cities, claiming to be “a dispensary in [city]” on your homepage fundamentally misrepresents your business – target the broader region you serve instead and focus on the products you offer, and let individual location pages handle city-level targeting.
- Link each Google Business Profile (GBP) to its specific location page: Don’t be the MSO that links all of its GBPs to its homepage. The location page is the more relevant, specific match for someone looking into that particular store – just imagine you were a custom wanting information for a specific store and you instead got a general page that told you little to nothing about the hours, policies, and so forth for the nearby location.
- Don’t create separate social media profiles per location: One set of company-wide profiles is enough; splitting them up by store just fragments your brand and social media presence for no benefit. This is relevant to SEO because Google pulls information from your social media profiles to inform which customers to show your business to – but they understand that a many-location business needs just one set of social profiles.
Cannabis SEO Mistakes to Avoid
We’ve talked at length about what your dispensary should be doing for SEO. But there are also a few things you need to make a point not to do:
- Ignoring your Google Business Profile and only working on your website: The Local Pack shows up first in the search results for local queries, and 70% of searchers click on it. Therefore, your profile and your website need to work together and match each other – treat your website as an extension of your profile, not a separate effort.
- Over-indexing on one tactic: Google’s Local Pack ranks businesses on relevance, proximity, and prominence. Content builds relevance, authority work builds prominence, and both tactics work together to reinforce Google’s understanding of your proximity and help Big G show your business to good-fit customers. A content-only or link-only strategy will underperform because it’s only addressing one of the two levers you actually control. You’ll get less than 50% of your potential revenue results if you only do half the playbook.
- Trying to rank in markets where you don’t have a store: If someone wouldn’t reasonably drive from a given city to your dispensary, don’t try to rank there. Google won’t rank you in those areas, and it will dilute your authority and ability to rank in the areas where you do have potential customers. Focus only on areas where people would actually make the trip: 30 minutes drive or less should be your target area per store.
In other words:
- Google Business Profile + website = comprehensive relevance architecture.
- Content + authority = prominence, relevancy, AND proximity reinforcement.
- #1 ranking over 100 square miles > #10 ranking over 300 square miles.
That’s how you do cannabis SEO the right way.
5 High-Impact Things You Can Do for Your Dispensary’s SEO in the Next 30 Days
Before we end this guide (and before you build your SEO master plan), here are five quick-hit actions you can take in the next 30 days to improve your dispensary’s visibility for keywords that drive real foot traffic:
- Implement a review acquisition system: Reviews are one of the biggest Local Pack ranking factors, and out-pacing a competitor’s review velocity for even a few months can move you above them. Set up a system where you ask for reviews in person with an scannable QR code on-hand that links to your Google Business Profile, then, follow-up via email or SMS with customers that don’t leave reviews right away.
- Add photos to your Google Business Profile: If your competitors haven’t updated their profile in months and you start adding fresh photos regularly, Google may read that as a signal that you’re more active in the area than they are, and this can confer a ranking boost.
- Connect your social media profiles to your Google Business Profile: This creates an ongoing information feed into Google’s systems, which can translate into more impressions and clicks as Google learns more about your business, where you serve, what you offer, and who you’re a good fit for.
- If you’re a single-location shop, add your main category and city to your website’s H1: A simple, sales-focused homepage headline that includes your category and city gives Google (and visitors) an immediate, clear signal of what you are and where.
- Write “best dispensary in [city]” articles for your city and three to four nearby ones you serve: These listicles are high-intent content that can drive fast gains in both regular search and AI search results.
A proper SEO system can drive millions in annual revenue for your dispensary and is a significant investment. However, the five tactics above are things that any scrappy store owner or team member can execute upon to drive early wins while you work on the master plan.
Conclusion: Make SEO Into Your Dispensary’s Most Profitable Marketing Channel
SEO can be the golden ticket for your dispensary because it doesn’t depend on the things working against you elsewhere – restricted ad platforms and third-party sites that keep getting more expensive, more competitive, and less reliable.
Building out your keyword strategy, Google Business Profile, on-page content, off-page authority, and technical foundation together, rather than picking just one, is what turns this channel into a predictable source of foot traffic and revenue.
It takes 4-6 months of consistent work to show its full impact, but the compounding nature of organic search means every month of work makes the next one more effective, turning SEO into the marketing channel that keeps paying you back for years to come.
Cannabis Dispensary SEO: Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions we frequently hear from dispensary operators about SEO:
How Much Should You Invest in SEO for Your Dispensary?
It depends on how many locations you’re optimizing for and how competitive your market is, but most dispensaries should expect to invest between $1,500 and $4,500+ per month to see meaningful improvements in 4-6 months.
Should You Hire a Cannabis SEO Agency?
If you don’t have in-house capacity to consistently execute content, link building, and technical work every month, a specialized agency is usually a better bet than a generalist one, since cannabis-specific compliance and platform restrictions trip up teams without direct experience in the space.
What’s the Difference Between Local SEO and National SEO for a Dispensary?
Local SEO focuses on ranking for visiting-intent keywords tied to your physical location – “dispensary near me,” category plus city – to drive foot traffic. National SEO, more relevant if you also sell online, focuses on ranking product and category pages for people searching to buy without a specific location in mind. Most brick-and-mortar dispensaries should prioritize local SEO first.
